Each piece is made by hand in small numbers, so we render it rather than photograph a duplicate. The image shows the form, the material, the finish and the proportion — it is not a photograph of the exact piece you will receive, and natural stone varies from one piece to the next. Write to us and we will photograph the actual piece in stock, with its weight and measurements, before you buy.
Red Banded Agate Rice Bracelet
Graduated Arc · Red Banded Agate
Small elongated beads strung on their length, so the strand reads as woven rather than strung. Red banded agate is chalcedony with its iron oxide laid down in layers, so the bands are the structure of the stone rather than a pattern on it.
Red banded agate is chalcedony with its iron oxide laid down in layers, so the bands are the structure of the stone rather than a pattern on it. Cutting beads across the banding gives the concentric rings; cutting along it gives the flat stripes. A single strand is usually cut one way for consistency.
Small, elongated beads, named for the shape, strung on their length so they line up in fine parallel rows. Rice beads need more of them and more drilling per centimetre than any other shape, which is the work you are paying for; the effect is a strand that looks woven rather than strung.
Beads increase steadily in size from the clasp to the centre and back down the other side, so the strand has a definite middle and a definite weight. Grading a strand this way means sorting every bead by diameter first, and the beads at the centre of the arc are the ones that set the price.
Sizing: the strand is strung on a doubled elastic core with a knotted finish, and it is made in three lengths — a snug 16 cm, the standard 18 cm, and a loose 20 cm. Beads are graded by hand before stringing, so the strand you receive is matched for size and tone from the first bead to the last. Every bracelet is strung to order in small numbers; if you would like the exact strand photographed before it ships, ask and we will send you the picture.
Care: Hard and stable, and one of the few stones here that will take an ultrasonic cleaner. Water and a cloth are simpler.
