Raw pu-erh is the long game. This cake was pressed from ancient-tree (gushu) spring leaf on Jingmai Mountain in 2021, sun-dried rather than kiln-fired, so the enzymes are still alive and the tea is still slowly changing in the wrapper.

Today it is bright and bracing: orchid, raw sugarcane, a cooling menthol sensation down the throat and a distinct apricot sweetness in the aftertaste. In five years it will be rounder; in fifteen, it will be something else entirely. Buy two cakes — drink one, store one.
